Shopping on Audible
Audible produces audio books. Plain and simple, right? Well, quite, except books come in many shapes, forms, and sizes, and consequently so do their audio versions. Audible's full catalogue, encompassing more than 200,000 titles, would be impossible to hear and overwhelming to even contemplate. That's why there's as many categories on Audible's website as there's aisles in a bookshop – in fact, there's even more. You can browse by genre or listening time, by author or performer, and you can even jump from one to the other without having to walk all the way from one end of the shop to the other.
Audible's fiction section features more than 100,000 titles split into more manageable categories, such as literary, humour, chick flick or sagas. The sci-fi and fantasy series at Audible is particularly impressive, as the development of this catalogue was one of the first initiatives backed by Amazon after it took over the company in 2008. Audible has 22 different categories to choose from, ranging from classic radio broadcasts and film tie-ins to newspapers and magazines, thrillers and, naturally, an erotica section. But there are many more ways of selecting your books at Audible than just by genre. Browse the bestsellers or latest releases, Audible originals, popular features or road trip recommendations and find the Audible offer that is right for you.

While Audible is presently part of the Amazon organisation, this wasn't always the case. Audible was launched in 1995, in the early days of the digital revolution and right at the beginning of the dot-com bubble. Audible's original product, a digital playback device with about two hours' worth of storage capacity and a restricted library of dowloadable material to choose from at the company's website, seem almost preposterous by today's standards but the truth is that Audible was ahead of its time by quite a chunk. Consider, for instance, that Apple's first iTunes didn't hit the market until three years later!
In fact, Audible partnered with Apple in 2003 to become their main provider of audio books for their iTunes catalogue, and by 2005 Audible had developed the necessary technology to enable users to download copy-controlled versions of their books straight to their portable devices. This triggered interest in the company by Amazon, which eventually bought it out in 2008 for a remarkable $300 million.
Under the stewardship of Amazon, Audible has developed its own publishing imprint and attracted A-list actors to record great works of literature. Audible has compiled a catalogue that includes more than 200,000 titles and it has equipped a recording studio with six different sections where books are read out loud over the course of 16 hours, every day. Since 2016 Audible offers a channel of original podcasts for its users, to go with the audio books of all genres it offers in its catalogue.
