Denby has a long history in England and is considered a part of English heritage at this stage. For those of you that have been clearly living under a rock and never heard of the brand, this is who they are. They sell hand-crafted stoneware tableware and cookware items, these include dinner sets, mugs, serving dishes and more. They also stock a variety of glassware products and cast-iron cookware. They started in 1809 on the estate of William Drury-Lowe. Joseph Jager in partnership with Robert Charles George Brohier were manufacturing stoneware bottles. They stopped in 1814. Clay from a deposit on the estate was being used to make pottery at the Belper Pottery. So at the beginning of 1815 William Bourne of the Belper Pottery along with his sons William, John and Joseph decided to take a chance and took out a 21 year lease on the recently vacated factory.
Until 1834 Joseph ran the works in both Denby and Belper until deciding to bring everything to Denby, equipment and of course, workforce. They were known as Joseph Bourne and Son because Joseph Bourne took his son Joseph Harvey Bourne into partnership, and they stayed that way until the Joseph Bourne passed away in 1860.
With the aid of modern equipment, a drying slip, they managed to produce at least 25 tons of workable clay every day. Bourne had already patented improved kilns for stoneware in 1823 and subsequently in 1843, most of their products were made of salt-glazed stoneware. By the 1870s they really took off and were producing a large range of stoneware items. These goods were both practical and decorative.
The company went from strength to strength and this was aided greatly thanks to their transport links into Denby and beyond. Three or four vans a week would leave the factory either to go to their warehouse or to be shipped further afield.
Their product categories started to expand at this stage and they started specialising in kitchenware and, eventually, in tableware. They went on to buy the nearby Langley Mill Pottery in October 1959 such was the demand for their pottery.
Today they are still providing pottery that is designed to be enjoyed and passed down from generation to generation.
