This iconic brand's story began in 1974 when James Dyson bought a Hoover Junior vacuum cleaner. After a little bit, it lost suction leaving Dyson frustrated and unimpressed. Dyson emptied the bag thinking it would make a difference, it didn't. He decided to open the bag to further investigate and he saw a layer of dust inside that was the reason for this poor suction, it was clogging up the fine mesh.
Dyson had founded a ballbarrow company where here a large vacuum system was used to contain the fusion bonded epoxy coating that was sprayed on the wheelbarrow arms as a powder coating. He was unimpressed, a recurring theme that inspires his greatness. He was informed that giant cyclone systems were better, but that they did not usually offer this service on a smaller scale as it proved too costly. Obviously, Dyson decided to construct his own. While doing this he started to wonder if he could apply this to the vacuum so he designed a cardboard one and using some tape, he removed the bag and attached it to the hoover and he was satisfied with how it worked.
His bosses were unconvinced of his conviction in this cause so he was thrown out of the company. After receiving 49% of the investment for cyclonic vacuum development from Jeremy Fry and the rest from a loan, he started working from, you guessed it, his garden shed, where all great ideas start. He produced some prototypes, some successful, some not so much.
There wasn't much interest in his design until, lo and behold, his former employer started to see the light and a collaboration was born with Rotork and Zanussi selling them by mail order with Kleeneze through catalogues.
Along came a Japanese company, Apex Ltd., that had faith in his designs and Dyson Appliances Limited was finally born in 1991. This didn't go exactly as planned so they went their separate ways and Dyson started alone.
From here the company and their products grew to the amazingly successful business that it is today. So moral of the story, don't ever give up, you never know!
