Shopping on Foyles

When William and Gilbert Foyle started selling books, back in 1903, they focused only in educational texts. The decision was more fortuitous than deliberate, as they had both failed their civil service exams and were left with a bunch of books in perfect condition which they would never use again. They saw this as a chance to make back some of the money they'd spent on getting the books in the first place, so they placed an ad in the paper. The response was so overwhelming they decided to buy some more of the books and sell them for a profit. The margins were modest, even for the time (by year's end the siblings were but ten pound to the good) but this didn't keep the Foyles from opening their first bookshop, self-proclaim themselves as 'the largest educational booksellers in London'.

Foyles' focus on educational books has long been a thing of the past. With an increased range of titles and the move to large new premises in Charing Cross Road came a new motto too, as Foyles earned a reputation as 'the world's greatest bookshop'. Shop at Foyles for your favourite children's books or else visit the fiction department for the latest in English narrative. If you're in the Charing Cross Road shop you can head to the forth floor, where you will find the full catalogue of Grant and Cutler, Britain's largest foreign language retailer, which was integrated into the Foyles folder in 2011. Profit from our Foyles discount codes and earn major savings when you get your new books.

About Foyles

Talk to a Londoner about books and the likelihood is their minds will go straight to one image: Foyles' bookshop on Charing Cross Road. Once the epicentre of the capital's book trade, Charing Cross Road became so famous for its new and second-hand bookstores that the phenomenon was even taken to Hollywood in the famous film 84 Charing Cross Road, starring the glittering pair of Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft (as well as Judy Dench, of course!). By the time the movie was filmed, in the late 1980s, many bookshops in the Charing Cross Road-Shaftsbury Avenue area had been closing due to increased rent costs, but Foyles was still there, going strong in their mythical location, 119 Charing Cross Road, since the bookshop was relocated there all the way back in 1929.

In fact, Foyles has been associated with the book trade since 1904, when brothers Gilbert and William Foyle opened their first bookshop in Cecil Court, on the other side of Leicester Square tube station. Remaining in the Foyle family for more than a century, Foyles became a staple name in the industry, with several branches sprouting all over the city at various times. Still, Foyles remained an exclusively London-centric enterprise until well into the 21st century. The first Foyles bookshop to open outside the capital was the Bristol branch, in 2011, followed by the New Street shop in Birmingham. In 2014 Foyles moved two buildings down the road, preserving its iconic location on Charing Cross Road but moving to a larger space. The new flagship store houses 200,000 books and boasts more than four miles (4 miles!) of shelf-space. Since 2018 Foyles has been part of the Waterstones group, though all seven of the Foyles branches have retained their identity, including, of course, the Charing Cross Road store. No matter what you're after, you can be certain you'll find it at Foyles, and with our Foyles vouchers you'll get it cheaper!
