Laura Ashley began printing fabrics in her home kitchen in Pimlico back in 1953, after visiting an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert museum on traditional handicrafts. Having noticed a void in the market for small patches of fabric with traditional patterns she decided to produce them instead, together with her husband Bernard.
At first Laura Ashley designed handkerchiefs, placemats, and hand towels, which Bernard would then dye and print accordingly. The enterprise quickly gained a good reputation, selling well both by mail order and at department stores. Indeed, it went so well that Bernard left his job in the city and the couple turned to fabric printing full-time. The first name of the company was Ashley Mountney (her maiden name), though soon thereafter Bernard recognised that a woman's name would be more commercial for the product they were selling: Laura Ashley Plc had been born.
The 1960s saw the consolidation of the business, in particular with Laura Ashley's fashion line becoming more and more prominent. The first shop opened in Wales in 1961, and by 1967 the Ashleys opened their first branch in London, in the neighbourhood of South Kensington no less. Business expanded so quickly that Laura Ashley started granting concessions and even opening shops abroad. In the 1970s you could buy Laura Ashley products in Japan, and walk into the official Laura Ashley store in Paris or San Francisco.
The modern makeup of the company first began gaining shape in the 1980s, when the Ashleys moved to France. That's when Laura Ashley shifted its focus from fashion to interior design, with the grander, more expansive aesthetic that to this day informs the company's products. And yet, while the Eighties were a time of huge expansion for the firm, they were also a tragic decade for teh family, as Laura, Bernard's wife, fell down the stairs of her daughters house and lost her life in 1985.
Bernard took the reins of Laura Ashley after the accident, and remained at the helm until the 1990s. By then he hadn't just helped his wife build a successful business, he had in fact turned that business into a global corporation. But overexpansion became an issue and by the late 1990s Laura Ashley had to be saved from receivership by its current majority shareholder, the Malaysian group MUI. Under the stewardship of MUI Laura Ashley has been modernised, with a commitment to its original ethos. Online sales have become much more prominent in recent years, and the company has added more services to its traditional trade, opening the bespoke Laura Ashley design service and branching out to the wholesale segment with a specific focus on hotels.
