Despite its enormous success as a personal computer vendor, the story of Lenovo, at least at its origins, is actually a cautionary tale of misplaced ambition, minor setbacks, and unflinching determination.
First launched as Legend in Beijing in 1984, in the midst of China's economic reform and long before social and political unrest led to the Tiananmen Square protests, Legend was meant to import and adapt televisions for sale in the Chinese market. At the root of the initiative were 11 men, all of them engineers with little to no marketing experience, who secured a state-sponsored grant of approximately £50,000 to set up the company. Before thee end of 1985 the first incarnation of Lenovo had failed.
But scientists are nothing if not persistent, and this translated in the culture of the burgeoning IT firm. Legend regrouped and refocused, shifting its strategy towards adapting IBM personal computers instead, a move that proved more lucrative than TVs and that marked the beginning of a partnership that would eventually result in Lenovo acquiring IBM's personal computer business in 2005. By then Legend had been rebranded as Lenovo in an effort to move towards western markets, where the trademark for the rather generic original name could not be secured.
That was the beginning of an aggressive strategy that has taken Lenovo to the top of the global IT business. Targetted acquisitions and partnerships with Japanese, German and Brazilian firms have helped the firm grow outside of China, where it already enjoyed a fine share of the market. Purchasing Motorola from Google in 2014, Lenovo gave its mobile phone operation a definitive boost, and in 2015 the company rebranded, launching its current logo.
As of 2019 Lenovo employs more than 50,000 people worldwide and has grown into one of the flag carriers of China's economic success story.
