What does Wilko offer?
Wilko is the perfect shop to walk into to purchase one thing and leave with a bag full of items that you hadn't realised you needed, all while saving money.
This British high retail chain specialises in household goods and homewares. Wilko Retail Ltd. was formerly known as Wilkinson Cash Stores from 1930 to1941 and Wilkinson Hardware Stores then from 1941 to 2014 and now Wilko from 2015 to the present.
James Kemsey opened the first Wilkinson store with his fiancee Mary Cooper at 151 Charnwood Street, Leicester, in 1930, then a second store was opened in Wigston Magna, near Leicester, in 1932. By 1939, they had managed to open a total of nine branches. The company is still in the hands of the founder's family.
Wilkinson's son, Tony Wilkinson, joined the company in 1960 and then took over from his father as chairman in 1972 and retired in 2005. His daughter Lisa Wilkinson and his niece Karin Swann then took over from him.
The very first own-brand product that they sold was paint, back in 1973. They now have over 14,000 own-brand products that are their best sellers and count for over 50% of their annual income.
The Wilko Store, in over 90 years of trading, has always embraced changes and challenges to continue to provide the lowest possible prices. They have over 400 stores and 6.5 million visitors weekly!
