About Stena Line
Stena Line is one of the world’s largest ferry operators. They have over 28,000 yearly sailings with 18 ferry routes in Scandinavia, Ireland, UK and Latvia.
The company is Swedish but prides itself on being international with over 4,300 employees of more than 50 different nationalities.
Stena Line history
Stena Line, founded in 1962 in Gothenburg, Sweden by Sten A. Olsson, is one of the largest ferry operators in the world.
They operate services that travel from Denmark, Germany, Latvia, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
They have always been pioneers in ferry travel. Back in 1972, they were one of the first European ferry operators to introduce a computer-based reservation system for the travel business area. Then, in 1978, this expanded to the freight business area.
Over the years, they have continued to grow steadily, taking over more and more ferry companies. In the 1990s, Stena Line doubled in size when they started Sealink Stena Line, which then became today's well known and loved Stena Line (UK). This now operates all of Stena's ferry services between Great Britain and Ireland. They were around long before air travel was as easy as it is today so they have had decades of practice in becoming your favourite European ferry company.
In 1996, they introduced the HSS (High-speed Sea Service) vessels going from Belfast to Stranraer, Holyhead to Dún Laoghaire and Hoek van Holland to Harwich. These really helped put them on the map with travel time being significantly reduced.
They have been travelling from Belfast to Larne since 1995. That's 25 years of perfecting ferry travel from Ireland to Britain and Britain to Ireland! During this time, they have transported over 33 million passengers, 7 million cars and almost 7 million freight units.
