The company was founded by Alexander MacRae who emigrated from Loch Kishorn in the Western Highlands of Scotland to Sydney, Australia in 1910. He started his career as a milkman, before starting a hosiery company four years later called MacRae and Company Hosiery. He manufactured underwear under the brand name Fortitude which was taken from his family crest. It was because of the Australian Army's need for socks during the First World War that McRae had enough business to expand, and he branched out into swimwear. In 1927 he created his first line, which he called a "racer-back costume".
The name came about from a naming contest that was held among the MacRae staff. The winner, Captain Parsonson, came up with the catchphrase "Speed on in your Speedos." The company was then renamed Speedo Knitting Mills and the iconic brand was born.
There was some controversy around the revolutionary style, in that it allowed a greater range of motion in the water, so was snapped up by competitive swimmers. The open shoulder and exposed back, however, caused an issue and they were banned on some beaches.
Speedo got their big break when Australian, Clare Dennis, won the Women's 200m Breaststroke at the Los Angeles Olympic Games whilst wearing a Speedo swimsuit. She was, however, nearly disqualified for showing too much shoulder. Imagine what those judges would make of today's costumes!
Most of their resources were given to the War effort during World War II, however, as soon as it was over there was great demand for swimsuits, especially the recently debuted bikini style. They did a roaring trade, but again, not without controversy, and their two-piece was banned by Australian beach inspectors. The Melbourne Summer Games in 1956 really put their new nylon swimsuit on the global market. The now infamous swim briefs were debuted and the name Speedo became synonymous with swimwear. The rest, as they say, is history.
