For over 150 years H.Samuel has been one of the nation's most loved jewellers. It was started by a woman back when this would have been a scandal.

H. Samuel History

H.Samuel has surprised many over the years with the fact that H stands for Harriet. The infamous H.Samuel is a woman and she is the person responsible for starting the largest jewellery and watch business for its time! Now that's female empowerment!

More than 150 years ago in 1862, Harriet decided to follow her dreams by moving her father-in-law's clock-making and silversmith business from Liverpool to Manchester Market Street. It started out as a mail-order business. Remember women were not even allowed to vote at this time, and here's Harriet starting a business!

This mail-order business was successful for almost 30 years and in 1890 she opened the first retailer store in Lancashire. So many satisfied customers wrote to this mysterious H.Samuel complimenting their craftsmanship. Little did they know that it was a woman that was running the business.

In 1912, they bought a larger property in Birmingham in what is known as the Jewellery Quarter, it still exists to this day.

In 1948, some of the stores were destroyed as a result of the war but H.Samuel still kept selling jewellery and watches and continued to grow.

After the Second World War, Harriet's grandsons, Gilbert Edgar and Robert Edgar, took over as chairman and vice-chairman. The number of stores increased to 200 nationwide.

Between 1985 to 1993, the company merged with the Ratner Group bringing them to their largest number of stores; 550. The group underwent another restructure in the early 90s, changing their name to Signet Group.
