TUI has been carrying passengers to fabled destinations since the 1960s, although the TUI name only entered the British market in the 2000s. TUI (Tourist Union International) was originally established in Hanover, Germany in 1968, initially as a simple travel operator.
Through the 1970s the company enhanced its network, developing an air travel division, initiating partnerships with hotel chains, particularly in Spain and later on in Greece. TUI even launched a charter train connection to the most popular winter and summer holiday destinations in Italy, Croatia, Austria, Switzerland and Spain.
TUI's transformation into the huge player it has become began in 1998, when Hapag Lloyd, which owned 45% of the company's shares, was acquired by Preussag, an industrial conglomerate which had its sight set on moving into the leisure business.
Preussag soon purchased the remaining 55% of TUI and proceeded to build its own network of partnerships within the tourism industry under the umbrella HTU (Hapag Tourist Union). It didn't take long until Preussag discovered the value of a well established name in the travel industry, though, so rather than building a reputation for the newly formed HTU it decided to adopt the name TUI for the whole enterprise instead.
The end result of this corporate branding and rebranding was that TUI (the travel agents) came to be owned by none other than the TUI AG (formerly HTU, formerly Preussag, incorporating Hapag Lloyd). In other words, just the perfect example of the dizzying and often absurd merry-go-round that was the mergers and acquisitions market in the Nineties and the Naughties!
Be that as it may, TUI entered the British market in full with the acquisition in 2000 of Thomson Travel. TUI therefore inherited the long tradition and good name of a tour operator that had been active in the UK since 1965, and which included highly regarded brand names such as its in-house airline, Britannia. The transition from Thomson to TUI UK began a couple years later, though the Thomson name remained in some shape or form until 2017, when all the company's aircraft were rebranded TUI.
As of 2019, TUI is the third biggest airline in the UK, only behind EasyJet and British Airways, and by far the largest charter airline in the world. In the UK alone TUI has 12,500 employees managing more than 4,000 properties, 60 planes and 6 cruise ships, all for the benefit of the 6 million holidaymakers who on a yearly basis entrust the company with their travel arrangements.
