Anthropologie History

The story began in 1970 when two Lehigh University roommates, who then attended the University of Pennsylvania Wharton Business School together, needed a project for their entrepreneurial class. The two students were Richard Hayne and Scott Belair. They opened a retail store called Free People.

They then proceeded to open another store called Urban Outfitters. A friend of Richard presented him with a dilemma prompting him to open another store, Anthropologie. This friend of his complained that there were just not enough options for someone like her in clothing stores in Philadelphia. He decided that the store would reflect the customer he wanted to attract, they were wealthy, educated 30-45-year-old women who were creative and wanted this reflected in their choice of clothes.

So in 1992 in Wayne, Pennsylvania Anthropologie was opened. They opened their first store in a refurbished automobile shop, which was in keeping with their quirky, artistic vibe. A mail-order catalogue was released in 1998 to reach a larger audience and then later that year they launched their website.

Steps towards world domination were started when they opened their first international store in London and they started to grow. With over 200 stores across the US, Canada and the UK, they are well on their way to global dominance!
