EMP are a merchandising company originally out of Germany which specialise in alternative clothing and music. They've been promoting alternative and unique styles for over 30 years, since being formed as a mail order company in Lingen, near the border with the Netherlands. Over the years EMP have grown to become the largest alternative clothing and music retailer in Europe, and have you covered with everything from band t-shirts, to movies and TV merchandise.

EMP History

EMP was founded in 1986 by Felix Lathmate, a young enthusiast of heavy and thrash metal who struggled to find the products he wanted from his favourite American bands. It was the time of Metallica's "Master of Puppets", distributed not online but rather in cassette and vinyl form. Lathmate realised he wasn't the only one interested in products such as this, so having discovered an untapped niche in the market he set out to exploit it. From his own living room.

EMP was formally registered as a mail order company before the end of the year, and for the next two years Lathmate would handle and ship orders from his flat. The company finally moved to a 200-meter store in 1988 and grew steadily over the next 25 years. In 2015 Lathmate was bought out by the American private equity firm Sycamore Partners, which in turn sold EMP to the Warner Music Group in 2018 for a whopping 155 million euros. By then the company had more than 500 employees in its books, and a presence in a dozen different European countries.
