Moss Bros history
Moses Moss first opened two shops in 1851 in London's Covent Garden. The shops originally sold second-hand clothing. Moss was always about quality and his motto was 'Sell only the best stuff, give only the best service'. They still live by this rule to this day.
In 1881 they moved the clothing company into the King Street shop in Covent Garden. Sadly in 1894, Moss passed away leaving the shop to Alfred and George, two of his five sons.
A fantastic initiative was started in 1897 by Alfred. It was called The Hire Department and as you can imagine they loaned out suits. It started when Alfred started charging his friend Charles Pond for the suits he would loan him to perform at musical evenings in large private houses.
The name Moss Bros. finally goes up over the door of the rebuilt Covent Garden Shop for the first time in 1898. George's son Harry joins the business at the age of 13. He was destined to be the next boss or 'Guvnor' as they like to refer to him as.
A cupboard full of military regalia and items that were left over from the Boer War led to the opening of the Military Department in 1910. They use these to kit out officers. When WWI broke out in 1914 there was such a demand for uniforms that the staff had to sleep in the shop to try and get them out quick enough.
In 1918 they established the Saddlery Department in the basement of their King Street location when they bought the saddlers Parker's.
When Harry Moss at the young age of 25 becomes a Director in 1921 he had some changes that he wanted to make to bring them into the new era. He created the ready-to-wear business.
In 1924 they received a recommendation from King George V's Private Secretary when he suggests Moss Bros apparel to the first Labour Government for the correct 'levee' dress to wear at court. In 1934 Harry Moss deservedly is made Managing Director. He then passed away in 1937.
In 1939 during WWII they put away most of the Hire Department into storage. During this time stores were opened in important and well-chosen, strategic locations so they could cater to the armed forces.
Moss Bros opened a Women's Department and hire service for evening wear and wedding outfits in 1947.
During the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, people from all around and the highest courts in the land went to Moss Bros to get the correct dress for the royal event.
During the 60's Moss Bros continued to grow and was nearing its 100th shop. There were continual growth and various changes in the company during the following years. They acquired various fashion and menswear brands during the 80s and 90s.
With the help of a new managing director, some strategic decisions were taken such as opening a Moss Bros Hire concession on Cunard's QE2 cruise liner. They went into partnership with Limited to produce the Royal Ascot Collection, formal wear to buy or hire for extra special occasions.
There were some further changes and rebranding in the years that followed.
In the Spring of 2016 they launched a high street personalisation suiting service, 'Tailor-Me', the first of its kind ever in the UK.
They continue to grow and evolve with the ever-changing market.
