M&Co History

M&Co. is a Scottish chain previously known as Mackays. They are a retail store that sells women's, men's, and children's clothes, as well as small homeware products.

The company was established in 1834 by the McGeoch family who originally started a pawnbroker business in Paisley.

Then in 1953, under Neil McGeoch, they started converting their pawnshops to clothing stores. This led to the opening of the first store in London in 1969. Within a year they had a chain of seven stores leading to them expanding into the south of England. They were trading in 50 stores up in Scotland at this time.

They bought over Ghinns Ltd in London helping them to grow even further. In the mid-70s they were trading in over 100 stores.

Len and Iain McGeoch took over the company from their father in 1973 and they adopted a low-priced retail clothing format, called Mackays.

In 1986 they decided to expand across the pond and bought Apparel Affiliates Inc. who owned over 140 stores across the US. They were declared bankrupt and forced to leave the US.

During the mid-1980s they had upwards of 150 stores and continued to grow internationally.

During the 90s they opened and closed various other stores which then led to Iain McGeoch taking over the family business.

In 2003 they launched a new upmarket clothing style, M&Co. Then from here 10 M&Co. stores open selling womenswear. They soon begin converting their other stores to M&Co. In 2006 they launched their website.

They soon started to go international again with the first store opening in Dubai. They now operate in over 300 stores!
